Al Gore hits on a credible concept?I’m tempted to draw an analogy that employs the probability of a room of chimps, typewriters, and Shakespeare, but that wouldn’t be so presidential of me…. Former Vice President Gore suggests that rather than taxing payroll, the government should tax pollution by employers. He’s on to two valuable concepts. First, removing payroll taxes: Brilliant! Let’s remove all disincentives to employment. Second, taxing pollution: Strongly worth considering. I still remain a skeptic on the human cause and effect mechanisms of global warming – if we are indeed experiencing global warming. But taxation of the “externalities” of industry would help approximate a proper valuation of the industrial activity, and then obvious market forces would create incentives for “greener” products and processes. I believe free markets and good environmental policy can exist in harmony, but the biggest obstacle is the proper valuation of these “externalities,” as well as the valuation we place on un-harvested resources. It’s time for the Republican Party to view markets and the economy with balance and not simply sell out to the short-term interests of big-business. Government needs to ensure that free markets are fair markets. Michael Previous: President’s Language Echoes Tyrant’s -- Next: Send me $3. I’m not too proud to take it! |
