Canadian Apologizes for US Injustice?I applaud the integrity of Canadian police commissioner Giuliano Zaccardelli who apologized for mistakenly identifying Maher Arar as an Islamic extremist. But based on that information the US arrested Arar, a Canadian citizen, and then deported him to Syria where he says he was repeatedly tortured during a year in Syrian jails. It seems that Mr. Arar has no ties to extremists other than being Syrian born. Do you suppose anyone in the Bush administration will apologize to Mr. Arar for this blatant injustice? Do you suppose anyone in the Bush administration will apologize to the American people for their blatant failure to preserve, protect, and defend the Constitution of the United States? I’m appalled that in the name of “security” we seem willing to abandon any principle of civil rights that we find inconvenient. The people like Arlen Specter who would fight for habeas corpus protections are drowned out by the paranoid xenophobes who lack any integrity whatsoever. Mr. Arar, I’m sorry.
