Dinner with the Oligarchs

I’ve been invited to dine with Newt Gingrich, Mario Cuomo, and Tim Russert! Even a longshot candidate gets a courtesy invitation to certain events.

The primary event is The Cooper Union Dialogue Series with Newt Gingrich and Mario Cuomo, moderated by Tim Russert.

From my invitation:

In 1860, presidential aspirant Abraham Lincoln delivered his “Right Makes Might” address at The Cooper Union, which helped him win the Republican nomination. Now, Republican Newt Gingrich, who served as Speaker of the U.S. House of Representatives from 1995 to 1999 and represented the State of Georgia for 20 years, and Democrat Mario M. Cuomo, who served as Governor of the State of New York from 1983 to 1995, will discuss the issues facing the presidential candidates in the 2008 election. Journalist and host of “Meet the Press” Tim Russert will moderate the discussion. Sharing the belief that national and international issues deserve full discussion and analysis in the style of Lincoln’s time – when sound bites and thirty-second political ads did not exist – Gingrich and Cuomo will challenge all declared presidential candidates: come to the Great Hall and address the American public in person in the same manner Lincoln did 147 years ago.

Now, I’ll admit my eyes lit up when I read “…all declared presidential candidates: come to the Great Hall and address the American public…” I naïvely thought, “Wow, a moment on stage with Newt and Mario!” Well, their “challenge” is not to be taken literally. I’m challenged to address the American public at some unspecified future date and time – not to share their spotlight.

But, I am invited to a private dinner to follow the event! I assume that Newt, Mario, and Tim will likely stick around for dinner. And, who knows, maybe even Rudy, Hillary, and Barrack might accept their invitations. Judging from the sponsors listed as members of the Cooper Union’s President’s Council, there’s even an outside chance that Martha Stewart or Morley Safer could attend.

So, I’ve booked a cheap airfare, found an inexpensive-by-New-York-standards hotel room at a discount, and sent my good suit off to the cleaners. Now all I have to do is come up with a dazzling question to ask from the audience at the forum, and practice my “elevator pitch” for use at dinner with the ruling elite.

Wish me luck. Hopefully I won’t use the wrong fork or commit any dreadful faux pas to reveal my upbringing in the cornfields. I might even make a connection or two to help advance the campaign!
