Michael Smith in the community

Don’t let the door hit you on the way out…

Who’s leaving who? (or is it whom?) “Conservatives” abandoning the Republican Party? According to Richard Viguerie, “…conservatives must stop funding the Republican National Committee and other party groups.” And I think he’s on to something, although I’d make one correction. I’d draw a distinction between fiscal conservatives and the social conservatives that Viguerie has in mind. He’s correct in feeling that the current Republican powers seem to have little respect for the concepts of smaller government and individual liberties. But he also feels the Bush Republicans aren’t serving his agenda on abortion? Like many social conservatives, he talks about smaller government but then wants to pick and choose where government intervenes in private lives—and it seems the uterus is OK. He called congressional Republicans “unprincipled power brokers”, whose agenda “comes from big business”. Well, he seems to have gotten that part right. Republicans need to search their hearts a bit, then apply a bit of principled logic. The constitution is pretty clear about what the federal government should be doing, and more importantly – NOT be doing. Let’s see them advocate a smaller government, a smaller military, less intrusion of civil liberties, and less social/religious activism. Michael
