End Cuba’s Isolation If Fidel kicks the bucket we can hopefully abandon our pointless isolation of Cuba. Engagement has brought down more communist regimes than isolation ever did. Coca-Cola, Levis, rock and roll, and tourism will do more to transform Cuba than our continued belligerence.
I probably won’t carry the Cuban-refugee vote in Florida, but they seem to be the only ones who still advocate for isolation – all while they pump dollars to family members stuck back on the island.

Previous: Leadership vs. Representation -- Next: Republican Enough? Comment from Anonymous: We should end the Cuban embargo because it is illegal, immoral, and wrong! We are the ones that are wrong. We have a higher infant mortality rate than Cuba and 18, 000 people that die each year due to lack of health care. Our prisons are over-flowing and we have 12,000 gun homoicides annually. And you demonize Castro and want to give Cuba Coca Cola and American jeans? I think we should take a lesson from Cuba not what you suggest. If you were not saturated with propaganda from your parents and grandparents from the cold war about “evil communism’” you might be able to look at the facts objectively. That’s not my phrasing.) came not from my parents or grandparents. I developed my own opinions of communist regimes from my front-row seat as a Russian linguist in the military during the late 80s and early 90s. Regarding infant mortality rates; examine it thoughtfully. Our numbers are skewed by statistics on premature births. Whether or not that is a good thing is another debate. There’s a saying that “no two countries with a McDonalds have ever gone to war”. Basically the idea is that once two nation’s economies become entertwined to a certain level, normal political corruption will prevent hostilities between them.
