Eugene GOP Burka Parade.

Five or six women in black burkas came wandering through the Eugene Hilton lobby where the state GOP convention was having a pre-dinner social hour. People didn’t exactly stop everything and stare, but it had the feeling of obtuse performance art or perhaps a peculiar political protest. I don’t know if perhaps they were lost, or just taking in the sights or what, but they came in from the front lobby, walked single-file through the conference area lobby where about 100 Republicans were standing around schmoozing and having drinks, then after they must have found a dead-end at the back of the hall, they came back through again and out a side door. I guess there’s no reason it’s inherently weird, but given the current administration’s military adventures half-way around the world, this seemingly coincidental intersection of cultures seemed somewhat surreal.

I can picture that. Well spoken. Do you have a recording of Polka and Fugue from Schwanda the Bagpiper?

Comment from Michael Smith:
I don’t have a recording of P & F, but here’s a sample from a Navy Band recording (this is from the Polka – the fugue has some great low brass parts.)

That’s pretty wild. I’ll bet it was some white girls of Eugene, “artistically” as you mentioned.

Saw you in the paper today. I really hope that American Republicans at least get a chance to hear what you have to say. All the best of luck! I mean that.
