Florida’s Harris is Unfortunately Typical.

Katherine Harris’ view that “If you’re not electing Christians, then in essence you are going to legislate sin,” is depressingly representative of “conservatives” in today’s Republican Party. Here in Oregon they justify all morality as flowing “from the Creator,” implying that anyone who would deny a theist view of the universe is unarguably immoral.

Perhaps it’s easy enough for this lot to view Muslims as immoral suicide bombers – it seems to be the most convenient portrayal in this day and age. Secular humanists are practically godless communists and clearly immoral – a convenient result of nearly fifty years of cold war propaganda. Buddhists and various other cults of “eastern mysticism” believe we can be reincarnated as cows, or rats, or worse – an insult to our egos and therefore immoral.

Somehow these “Christians” tolerate Jews as distant relatives. Since Christ was a Jew, and was clearly not immoral, there must be some inherent morality in the Jews. Thanks to Mel Gibson we understand that if it weren’t for the Jews, Jesus couldn’t have died to prove how much he loves us. After going to all that trouble, if you don’t fall into line and adopt Christianity, you can go straight to hell and burn with the other immoral heathens that make up roughly two thirds of the earth’s population.

OK, I’m making a little fun at the expense of these “Christians.” So sorry. Sister Mary Esther was right – she said I was nothing but trouble, but I did get a little of the concept after eight years in Catholic grade school. Seriously, can’t we get a little more “love thy neighbor” and “do unto others as you would have done unto you?” Wouldn’t the world be a bit more “Christian” if we “judged not, lest we be judged?” Can’t we all be a bit more reluctant to cast the first stone?

Back to Katherine Harris. If Katherine’s brand of morality prevails, I hope to embody immorality. If Katherine’s brand of Republicanism prevails, I gladly adopt the RINO (Republican In Name Only) label. I hope that Christians recognize that Katherine’s brand of Christianity is not worthy of their Savior’s sacrifice. I hope the voters of Florida reject Katherine Harris and I hope the Republican Party can expand its tent to embrace all Americans who value Constitutional concepts of civil liberties and personal freedoms.
