Former GOP Rep goes LibertarianBob Barr, a GOP congressman who served eight years representing Georgia until his 2002 defeat, has quit the Republican Party and joined the Libertarian Party. According to the AP: “It’s something that’s been bothering me for quite some time, the direction in which the party has been going more and more toward big government and disregard toward privacy and civil liberties,” said Barr, 58, a lawyer and consultant living in Atlanta. “In terms of where the country needs to be going to get back to our constitutional roots … I’ve come to the conclusion that the only way to do that is to work with a party that practices what it preaches, and that is the Libertarian Party.” I find his move understandable, but disappointing. I wish he’d apply his efforts toward changing the Republican Party. Michael Previous: Blustery… -- Next: New Year's Resolution Comment from msouth: You seem pretty libertarian. What is your motivation for staying in the Republican party when most of your positions are better aligned with the libertarian party? (Not criticizing you, just curious.) If the Republican Party would adhere to its principles of individual accountability, smaller less intrusive government, and personal liberty – it would seem pretty libertarian. Since we have a deeply ingrained two-party system I’d like to see the Republican Party uphold its obligations to the Constitution. If they continue to fail, I wish the Libertarian Party better luck.
