Get a Warrant,Or get off my phone line! U.S. District Judge Anna Diggs Taylor ordered an immediate halt to the Bush administration’s policy of warrant-less wiretapping. There may be justification to tap these phones, but executive power does not supersede our 4th amendment protections against unreasonable searches and seizures. President Bush needs to get a warrant, just like anybody else – no matter how many “evil doers” are out there. Why many conservatives don’t recognize this threat from an intrusive government is beyond me. Many are the same people who are convinced that the government wants to confiscate their guns and that the nanny state is too intrusive. Yet they support a police state that would tap their phones? Again, I ask those who were comfortable with President Bush’s exercise of executive “judgment”, would you be comfortable if Hillary sat in the Oval Office and exercised the same option? Comment from Anonymous: i dont know how most people feel but i have to say that after the wiretapping story appeared i posted less and commented less on blogs. i felt like it oppressed me to know that if i voiced an opinion not popular the government might label me a spy.but then i calmed down and decided that was wrong approach and that maybe that was the reason the leak even happened. if you feel oppressed ,then you are oppressed and at 57 years of age i refuse to just lay down and give up. fear tho is a powerful enemy. br3n Posted by Anonymous Aug 17, 09:16 AM # Comment from b!X: Those interested can see the breakdown of the judge’s points in the crosspost from my own site which I put on BlueOregon. Why many conservatives don’t recognize this threat from an intrusive government is beyond me – first, I don’t feel threatened one bit. Second, if you can’t understand the reasoning then you shouldn’t be thinking about being president. Again, you are free to search this comment and seize the contents from the public – if you feel threatened. Unfortunately, that is the ilk of the kind of people you are going to have to win over if you are running as a Republican. It is a shame that someone as dopey as Bush can hypnotize the masses into SUCH blatant ignorance. And beautiful job on the blameshifting to Jimmy Carter. Completely unforeseen, Justadog! Michael, great post and I concur! Thank God we have judges who still dare to rule in favor of the law. Let the FBI,CIA and NSA do their job to protect the country and world from terrorism, don’t slow the process down with more red tape and paper work…. Posted by Jeff Aug 18, 10:44 AM # Comment from Michael Smith: The Constitution and 4th amendment are to be dismissed as “red tape and paperwork?” The Legislative Branch, the American Bar Association, and now the Judicial Branch don’t see it that way. I’d rather live with our liberties intact, under the threat of terrorist attack, than to live in a police state free of terrorist threat. The President vows: “I do solemnly swear (or affirm) that I will faithfully execute the office of President of the United States, and will to the best of my ability, preserve, protect and defend the Constitution of the United States.“ If you’re not comfortable with my commitment to the Constitution, I’m sorry to lose your vote. You should perhaps find another Republican candidate’s blog on which to air your views. Posted by Michael Smith Aug 18, 11:41 AM # |
