IraqIt was a misguided mistake. It has delivered neither liberation for Iraqis nor security for Americans. Unless profound strategic changes are enacted quickly, it’s time to get out. I realized that my platform statement on Iraq was several months old, so I’ve published a new one. Of course the candidate who starts his presidency in 2009 will face a fairly obvious choice. Either the war will have substantially stabilized, or any winning candidate will have committed to prompt withdrawal – no candidate will be electable by November 2008 who doesn’t support withdrawal. But until then, candidates will second guess President Bush’s strategy. Those who currently hold elected office will be judged by their record. They will mostly try to hedge their positions. John McCain, who hawkishly supports the “surge,” today claimed that Donald Rumsfeld had mismanaged the war. It seems to me that Sen.McCain is trying to have it both ways. The proposed surge is little more than more of the same. I don’t have a vote in the Congress, so it may be fair to claim my opinion is little more than hot air, but I don’t support the surge. We need strategic change or withdrawal – quickly. Michael Previous: The Religious Right – Corrupting Republican Principles -- Next: Farewell Chief, Oskee-wow-wow. |
