Leadership vs. Representation

A commenter on my blog asserts that he doesn’t want leadership, he wants representation. Fair enough. We’d all prefer to be represented rather than led. But I think leadership, integrity, philosophy, and vision, are the qualities by which we can gauge the representative qualities we’re looking for. We can’t anticipate every possible situation in which we might expect to be represented. There are often murky situations where we might be unsure of how we should be represented. We might even get wrapped up in a temporary passion where leadership would lead us to better solutions than our initial instincts might immediately push us. I’d suggest that humble leadership is what our process lacks. Not the sort of stubborn “resolve” that might be passed off as vision or the dogmatic view of issues that poses as integrity. We need a reflective, consistent philosophical approach to challenges that provides insight to how a leader might respond to unexpected challenges. We need leadership that is not driven by ego, but by the integrity to do what’s best for all Americans – not just the winning Party. We need character that is strong enough to admit mistakes and move on. We need vision to advance us through uncertainty. If we settle for just representation we’re likely to miss opportunities for progress. We have many difficult issues ahead of our Nation from Social Security, Health Care, Terrorism, to Economic Growth. Leadership is needed to find solutions, but the leadership must be representative of all our interests. Seek representation. But look for someone who can lead while representing the interests of all Americans. Michael
