NASA Moon Camp? Warning Will Robinson!

I like space exploration as much as the next guy. But how much investment in moon bases should a country make that has $9 trillion in debt? Bluntly – none!

NASA announced plans for a lunar moon base beginning in 2020 and undoubtedly costing billions of dollars.

The Constitution mandates national defense, postal roads, coinage, and the regulation of interstate commerce among various things. Some argue that the “common good” includes education, housing, health, retirement, etc. We could argue about the constitutionality of that all day long between conservative and liberal perspectives. But it’s a long stretch to infer a constitutional mandate for space exploration.

I could fully support space exploration as part of a balanced budget with no debt, but I can’t see how it can be justified currently. Let’s get our own country in order before we expand off the planet.

Comment from Paul Davis:

Well, if history has shown anything, the best way to cut spending (in this country anyway) is with a split government.
When one party has the White House and the other the congress (by a slim majority) neither wants to spend money because they think it will make the other side look bad.

Of course some things are obviously dumb, like cutting taxes while going to war.
