Political retribution?
The “retirement” of Lt. Cmdr Charles Swift, after his successful Supreme Court defense of Salim Ahmed Hamdan, sure looks like it has political undertones. The Navy notified him that he would be passed over for promotion within two weeks of the Supreme Court decision that gutted President Bush’s plan for military tribunals for Guantanamo Bay detainees.
Lt. Cmdr Swift, would you like to be Attorney General? If the twisting tides of fate ever put me in the White House, I’d be honored to have an Attorney General with your integrity to defend your client in the face of such difficult public perceptions. Or, maybe Secretary of the Navy? Let’s chat.
