Read my lips. ALL new taxes!No wild promises to cut taxes, or unbelievable pledges to provide all things to all people. Federal government should be cut dramatically, yet the huge debt needs to be paid off. Revenue needs to be maintained while expenses are reduced. What we need is a system of taxes that encourages the right behaviors, puts our industries on a competitive footing internationally, and rewards hard work with economic security. Our current system taxes income; we penalize people for earning money. Our “progressive” system penalizes people more the more they earn. Let’s repeal the 16th amendment and abolish income taxes. Americans for Fair Taxation frames the argument thoroughly and thoughtfully. Al Gore suggested this week that we replace business payroll taxes with a tax on CO2 emissions. He’s got the right idea. How did we ever think it was good to tax companies for hiring people? If we must generate revenue, let’s do it in a manner that creates incentive for better behaviors.
