Republicans for 2008; not promising.

Several of the front-runners for the White House in 2008 are showing a clear trend toward the lowest common denominator as they chase the “base” of social conservatives. Liz Mair at GOPProgess blasts Mitt Romney for hypocrisy as he blasts John McCain’s statement on gay marriage. And although McCain is half right on his federalism argument, they’re both pandering to homophobes by squawking about the sanctity of marriage.

But McCain and Romney will look like humanist hippies compared to Sen. Sam Brownback and the rhetoric he’s likely to bring to the campaign. Trying to position himself as a “full-scale Ronald Reagan conservative,” Brownback will likely base his campaign on little more than abortion, gay marriage, and self-righteousness. He’s unlikely to remember Ronald Reagan’s big tent philosophy.

So far, Rudy Giuliani is the only one in the Republican field who has taken a bit more moderate ground. I wish him luck.

I’ll continue to push my perspective that true conservatism is about government power wielded conservatively, not conservative values imposed freely by intrusive government. Mine is not a perspective that is likely to attract people with money who want their view pushed, but nobody will accuse me of being a “me too” candidate chasing the base.
