Sanctimony Tempting for Many PoliticiansA new poll shows that moral issues may be a lessening concern for many voters. I’m suspicious. It sure seems that self-righteous moral do-gooding is running rampant. I suspect that even if the polled level of moral interest has declined, the fervor of those who are focused on saving their heathen neighbors is as strong as ever. The homophobes, xenophobes, islamaphobes, and politically-minded social conservatives find new ways every day to impose their moral views. And how has the Republican Party become a willing partner in this crime? This is the party that professes smaller government, individual liberty, and personal responsibility. Unfortunately, they are also a party with a keen eye for a constituency, and that constituency’s money. Press your politicians on these issues, and examine your own views. Everyone is entitled to their beliefs and faith, but take a hard look at how far the government should actively shape these issues. A popular theocracy is no less oppressive just because it’s aligned with your faith. Millions support their popular theocracy in Iran. Let’s not allow an American theocracy.
