Send me $3. I’m not too proud to take it!Apparently the “major” candidates figure that the 2008 campaign will cost much more than the federal matching limits, so they’re not interested in the $3 you might have designated on your tax return. In fact, experts suggest that the 2008 race could cost each nominee $500 million. What’s an outsider to do? How can I preserve my integrity and rail against special interests if I raise that kind of money? How can I compete if I don’t? I’ve learned over the past few months that the “marketplace of ideas” is a loud place. It takes money to make oneself heard. The alternative is to have an outrageous idea, but I’d like to think that my ideas are outrageous only in their common sense application of constitutional concepts. I’d probably get more attention if I ranted against illegal aliens, invoked the fear of islamofascism, or prophesized the end of times. I’m afraid I might have made a tactical error in running for the nomination of the Party that has encouraged that noise. I’m hopeful that there are some who still remember the Republican Party of Teddy Roosevelt, Dwight Eisenhower, and Barry Goldwater. I’m hoping that amid all the ranting noise some will notice a rational argument civilly presented and thoughtfully reasoned. (At least as thoughtfully as I can manage.) Perhaps it will be the contrast that will stand out. I have to hope so since I don’t have much chance of raising $500 million any time soon.
