Shake My Hand, Dammit!

I spent the middle of the day in Eugene with my campaign booth at Wayne Morse Free Speech Plaza. I had a nice enough chat with a couple of liberals who adamantly refused to shake my hand.

I can understand that many liberals see Republicans as the root of all evil. I know a few Republicans who share the reciprocal view. But what about all the love and global harmony I was listening to from the free speech platform? What about, “Can’t we all just get along?” What about, “We all have to stand up and make ourselves heard?”

Apparently making oneself heard doesn’t imply any obligation to listen to others, nor does it extend to the simple courtesy of a cordial handshake.

Most politely listened to my brief spiel at the open mike. Several bestowed on me their take on corporate fascism and conspiracy theories. We even found some common ground on a less intrusive federal government getting out of cannabis persecution and warrant-less wiretapping. But when the “marketplace of ideas” can’t even exchange a handshake, it makes me wonder if anyone is listening to anything other than what they have predetermined to hear.
