Vulture Breath – a personal note…As I returned from community band rehearsal this evening my memory drifted to that fateful moment exactly 18 years ago when I first met my lovely wife Kathleen. Her first words to me: “Vulture Breath!” It was magic. I was newly arrived in Monterey California and had just started the Russian language course at the Defense Language Institute. Coming after three years stationed in the sage brush at Mountain Home Air Force Base in Idaho, I was pleased to be in a little more urban setting with some diversions like the Monterey Community Band. I had seen a notice at the music store downtown, so I looked forward to this weekly diversion from the intense course of study in Russian. As the band shuffled around for a mid-rehearsal break, the blonde girl who played trombone walked past just as I honked through a tricky passage. I heard her say “vulture breath,” but after several years in Idaho I was willing to assume that she was flirting with me. She quickly claimed to have said “felt your breath” as the air from my tuba assaulted her. This was quite clearly flirting according to my Idaho standards. As we chatted we discovered that it was the first night in the band for both of us. She had recently relocated from southern California and her step-father was the conductor of the band. A condition of her temporary residence in his house was her attendance in the trombone section. We decided that we should get together to explore the Monterey area. She thought it was casual conversation – I considered it a date. The rest, as they say, is history. Our first date was on St. Patrick’s Day, we were engaged in mid August, and married in November. Maybe I’ll write more as those anniversaries come by. I love you Kathleen.
