Your State of the Union?

I don’t know about you, but President George Bush’s view on the state of the union doesn’t hold much sway around my house. How relevant will his speech be to your household? How relevant is Hillary Clinton’s view or Mitt Romney’s?

Are you better off than you were 6 years ago? Is the world better, and is America more prosperous? Secure? Respected?

Six years ago I had just finished an accounting degree and an MBA. Today I’m better off in most respects, but I can’t say that it’s due to the Bush administration. In fact, I’d have to say in many ways, I’m better off despite the Bush administration.

I’m making reasonably good money, and I get to keep a bit more of it due to Bush administration tax cuts, but I’m paying taxes into a government that has grown beyond its means, and has promised me security from jihadists while eroding my civil liberties. I work for a corporate behemoth that has reduced my benefits, charges me more for health insurance, and has eliminated once promised retirement perks.

My biggest concern is for my children. They face economic, environmental, and security challenges all trending the wrong direction. Most of our “leaders” refuse to address these issues; they’re more concerned with the political clout of our eldest generation and the flow of funds from corporate interests.

What about you? What’s the state of your union?
