ChinaChina’s growing economy poses many opportunities and several dilemmas for all Americans. Their low price products, flooding the shelves of Walmart and others, have created an effective pay raise for consumers as their dollars go further. It seems, however, that those lower prices are only possible due to artificial currency rates manipulated by the Chinese government. We need a more level playing field to ensure that American jobs aren’t unfairly disadvantaged. China’s frequently oppressive human rights record is a concern, but one that is probably best influenced through engagement. We need to provide strong economic incentives to China to pull them into alignment with our “western” standard. Our capitalist/consumerist influence brought down the iron curtain. Any populace that strives to a western standard of living will eventually demand a western philosophy of civil liberties and personal achievement. While it may have its flaws, our system of global markets is one of the most powerful tools of democracy.Previous: Death with Dignity -- Next: Corporate Taxes |
