Death Penalty

Capital punishment should be abolished. There can be almost no circumstance where some element of doubt doesn’t exist in a capital conviction.

There are various philosophical arguments for and against the death penalty, and the statistics on the application of capital punishment are mixed. There does not seem to be any correlation between executions and crime rates to suggest a deterrent effect. Some have argued a racial bias, but 39 of the 59 executed in 2004 were white. There definitely seems to be bias by state, with Texas executing 23 of the US total 59.

Capital punishment is just not worth the risk, however small, that any innocent person would be killed at the hands of the state.
